Steve Balich, the Supervisor of Homer Township, has taken what he deems as ‘crucial steps’ to initiate an important conversation.
Emotions ran high among the residents and non-residents of Homer Township when they were confronted with the sight of the American flag, a symbol of unity and pride, flown upside down by the Township’s Supervisor, Steve Balich, a former chair member of the Republican Party of Homer Township, outside the Homer Township offices on Friday morning, May 31.
The act on display, a “distress symbol,” lasted 6 hours; Balich, with a sense of urgency, said the act was ‘to get people talking’ after learning about former President Donald Trump’s 34 convictions on Thursday, May 30. Balich expressed, “As Americans, no matter which political party you support, we should be outraged and very concerned. If laws in our country can be changed and manipulated to go after the current leading presidential candidate, how long before it trickles down to us as ordinary citizens? If they can go after Donald Trump, they can go after all of us.”
An outcry, the ‘icing on the cake,’ Balich argues that making such a bold statement enables the shift within our country’s lens; he added, “What once was a maintained merging of two parties has now become splitting a party entirely.” Balich said, “This is a clear sign of the changing political landscape, and it should not be taken lightly.”
In a statement released on the township’s website, Balich shared that ‘The country is in distress, and our Constitution is under attack. ‘ When asked if there had been any regrets since, Balich replied, “No, I have no regrets. That symbol that is used when in distress is to get people to start talking. I believe the conversation needs to start. Our country is under siege.”
