On Saturday, September 28, the Saint Xavier University (SXU) Men’s soccer (1-6-3, 1-0-2 CCAC) team shutout St. Ambrose University (Iowa: 0-5-2) for their first win on the season.

With 6:03 left in the first, sophomore Irving Moreno was tripped up on the right side of the field. SXU was then awarded a penalty kick which senior midfielder Francisco Espinoza took. He started his momentum with a stutter step and then Espinoza connected with the ball, driving it low center for a 1-0 lead.

In the second, junior goalkeeper Joel Estrada booted a free kick over 70 yards downfield. The hop was just to high for St. Ambrose’s keeper to control but not for sophomore midfield Mauri Martinez. His kick connected with the netting on the north goal at the 14:42 mark; in the second.

FINAL: Saint Xavier 2, St. Ambrose 0.

Having eights saves on the day was junior goalkeeper Joel Estrada.

Next week Saint Xavier will travel on the road to take on Calumet College of St. Joseph (0-4) on Saturday October 5.
