1st Girls Flag Football State Championship

Fremd poses with the “Illinois High School Association – State Champions – 2024 Girls Flag Football” trophy.

By Claude Martinez. Update on 10/20/24 at 8:57 PM.

The inaugural IHSA Girls Flag Football State Championship (held at Willowbrook High School on 10/19/24) featured two classes of Vikings: Guilford, boasting an impressive 21-0 record, and Fremd, the underdogs at 13-4.

The first half saw both teams score, ending with a 6-6 tie.

After, Fremd quickly advanced the ball down the field. At the 9-yard line, Lily Mayer connected with Jordan Farrell for a short touchdown.

Guilford responded when Hannah Jordan flicked a pass to Kamorrah Stron.

With just 10 minutes remaining, Fremd tightened its grip on both offense and defense. Mayer threw a stunning 36-yard touchdown pass to Asya Poyraz, who then showcased her defensive skills by recovering the ball on the next play. The Fremd Vikings sealed the victory with another touchdown pass, this time to Bella Del Mar. On Fremd’s defense, Ella Todd made the final play with an interception.

FINAL: Fremd 24, Guilford 12. The first state championship title goes to Fremd High School.

The WCCN Offensive Player of the Game was junior quarterback Lily Mayer, who recorded 4 passing touchdowns for 217 yards, completing 18 of 20 attempts.

The WCCN Defensive Player of the Game was MacKenzie Drake, who achieved 3 sacks and 3 critical flag pulls.

WCCN extends its gratitude to the IHSA. Until next year, I’m Claude Martinez, reporting for Will Cook County News.

Special thank you to the IHSA, Ed Sullivan, Matt Troha, Rebecca O’Dette (Fremd Head Coach) and Greg Taylor, Sr. (Guilford Head Coach). (TOTAL: 0:56 seconds of “highlights”).
