New Lenox – It was a gorgeous day for baseball on April 28 as the Lockport Township High School Porters (12-6; 4-3 SWC) traveled to take on the Lincoln-Way Central Knights (10-6; 5-2 SWC) in a Southwest Suburban Conference match.
The high temperature reached 84 degrees, with winds blowing out to center field — something a few batters would take advantage of.
At the bottom of the third inning, Lincoln-Way Central led 1-0 with runners on first and third. Shawn Mowry came to the plate and launched a deep shot over the left-center fence, the ball landing in the hedges for a 3-run homer.
After two more at-bats, there were runners on second and third. Peyton Ablin, who had already recorded a sacrifice RBI earlier in the game, dropped a soft liner just beyond the infield for a 2-RBI double.
In the top of the fourth, the Porters loaded the bases with Jack Schiek at the plate. On the first pitch, he ripped a shot down the left field line and over the fence, bringing in a grand slam to make it 6-4.
By the top of the seventh, the score was 7-4 in favor of Lincoln-Way Central.
Lockport needed a rally.
Adam Kozak delivered an RBI single, and Logan Nagle added a sacrifice fly. But it was a little too late — the final out came when Liam Arsich made a sliding catch to seal the win.
Final: Lincoln-Way Central 7, Lockport 6
The WCCN Player of the Game was senior catcher Peyton Ablin, who recorded 5 RBIs and 2 doubles.
Another standout was junior third baseman Shawn Mowry, who hit a 3-run homer and also drew a walk.
