Crestwood – On Saturday, May 10, 2025, the 33rd Annual Chicago River Day Cleanup was held at more than 75 locations across the Chicagoland area. The event, hosted by Friends of the Chicago River, brought together volunteers from across the region in a shared effort to protect and restore local waterways.
Originally started in 1992, the cleanup has rapidly expanded over the years to include locations spanning from the northernmost parts to the southern edges of Cook County.
Once again, WCCN was on the ground covering the Crestwood cleanup site.
Volunteers at this location worked side by side to clean up the land adjacent to Cal Sag Road and the Cal-Sag Channel, just behind the ALDI at 4820 Cal Sag Rd., Crestwood.
Among the attendees was Crestwood Village Clerk Cathy Johnson.
Crestwood Mayor Ken Klein also took part in the event, leading volunteers in cleaning up a nearby area.
Meanwhile, an enthusiastic Alsip resident dove into the wooded areas to track down hard-to-reach litter.
Another dedicated public servant in attendance was Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) Vice President Theresa Flynn, who is also a Crestwood resident. Her participation reflected her pride in giving back to the community and helping improve the local channel.
