Richton Park – It was a close one when the #3 Hillcrest Hawks faced the #7 Amos Alonzo Stagg Chargers in the IHSA sectional semifinals on October 13.
Putting the first points on the board for the Hawks was Davia Cobb, who caught a 60-yard pass from Dajha Johnson.
In the second quarter, the Chargers took control.
Juliane Roupas threw two touchdown passes: one to Victoria Perez for a 39-yard touchdown, and another roughly 35-yard pass to Perez that bounced off a defender’s hand into Perez’s hands at the buzzer.
At halftime, it was 13-6.
It was another buzzer-beater in the 3rd quarter when Johnson threw an 18-yard pass to Angel Taylor in the middle of the field, tying the game at 13-13.
Again, it was Johnson in the 4th, this time running for 9 yards and a touchdown.
But the Chargers were ready to strike back. Roupas threw a medium-range pass to Veronica Perez, who extended it for about 65 yards before being stopped at the 2. Two plays later, the pair connected again for the touchdown.
All they needed was the point-after attempt to tie the game, but Johnson came through and knocked down the ball.
From there, the Hawks held on to their lead, adding one more touchdown and a safety.
FINAL: Hillcrest 28, Amos Alonzo Stagg 19.
The WCCN Player of the Game was Dajha Johnson, who had 4 touchdowns: 3 passing and 1 rushing. She also grabbed 2 interceptions on defense.
