Gary, IN — On May 14, former second-round draft pick of the Chicago White Sox (2014), Spencer Adams took the mound for the Gary SouthShore RailCats in a home matchup against the red-hot Cleburne Railroaders (TX).
Cleburne (5-1) entered the game riding a four-game winning streak, including an 8–5 victory over the RailCats (0-5) the night before.
For Adams, a former top prospect with professional experience up to Triple-A (Charlotte Knights), this was his first outing since the 2020 offseason. Now classified as an LS-4 in independent ball, the 28-year-old is working to reignite his career.
Adams came out strong. He struck out the first batter he faced, and his defense took care of the rest in the opening frame. He followed up with one strikeout in the second and two more in the third.
Meanwhile, the RailCats’ offense supported him with a run in both the first and second innings to take a 2–0 lead.
Things turned in the fourth. Adams faced seven batters and allowed four hits, including a double and a triple, as Cleburne rallied to take a 4–2 lead.
Jonathan Martinez entered the game in relief of Spencer Adams.
Adams finished with 3.2 innings pitched, allowing 4 earned runs on 7 hits, with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts. He faced 20 batters, posting a 9.82 ERA and 2.18 WHIP.
FINAL: Cleburne Railroaders 5, Gary SouthShore RailCats 4.
Adams now looks to build on the early positives from his debut and regain form as he continues his comeback to professional baseball.
