Tinley Park — The IHSA Tinley Park Regional Championship took place on May 28, as the No. 4 seed Homewood-Flossmoor Vikings faced off against the powerful No. 1 seed Lincoln-Way Central Knights.

In the first set, Homewood-Flossmoor jumped out to a 21-14 lead, but the tide quickly turned as the Knights battled back to take the set 25-23.

Lincoln-Way Central controlled the second set, as the Knights kept the pressure on and cruised to a 25-17 win to claim the regional championship in straight sets, 2-0.

For Homewood-Flossmoor, junior outside hitter Surendran Heyward finished with six kills and five aces.

The WCCN Player of the Game was senior right side hitter Joey Vellenga, who finished the night with five kills, two aces, and one block.

He knew HF would be a tough opponent and highlighted several Knights players who stepped up throughout the match.

Head coach Matt Small said Vellenga’s impact goes far beyond the stat sheet.
