Crestwood – Ozinga Field — The Class 4A Super-Sectional was not only a battle against Mother Nature, but also a battle on the diamond, as the Mt. Carmel Caravan and Sandburg Eagles went into extra innings in a game to remember.
Mt. Carmel opened the scoring in the fourth inning when Brady Holland hit a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing home the runner from third base.
The following inning, Logan Fernandez ripped a ball down the left-field line that hit the middle of the fence, driving in two runs with a double.
Sandburg answered back in the sixth inning when Giovanni Longo launched a deep ball over the wall, cutting the deficit with a 2 rbi home run.
In the seventh, Sandburg’s Lucas Rosas delivered a sacrifice fly of his own, bringing home the game-tying run and forcing extra innings.
As the teams headed into extras, the rain began to pick up. Cullen Winters and Jonathan Osornio each delivered RBI singles to drive in two runs.
Following a wild pitch, another run crossed the plate.
FINAL: Mt. Carmel 6, Sandburg 3.
The Caravan will now face Libertyville in the IHSA Class 4A State Semifinals on June 12.
