New Year, New Paws, Same TLC

New year, new best friend? For Tender Loving Care Animal Shelter, the start of 2025 is a perfect time to connect animals in need with families ready to open their hearts and homes proving that fresh beginnings are for everyone—tails and all.

As the calendar turns to a new year, it’s a time for fresh starts and new resolutions. What better way to embrace this spirit than by welcoming a furry friend into your life?

For Tender Loving Care Animal Shelter (TLC), located at 13016 W 151st St, Homer Glen, fresh beginnings are at the heart of their mission—not just for the animals they take care of but for the families eager to bring them home. At TLC, it’s not just about finding homes for animals, it’s about finding the right homes.

TLC has been serving the community for over 50 years, providing refuge and hope for countless animals. This commitment to thoughtful rehoming comes from a deeply personal place for Dennis Carter Jr., who leads the shelter as a continuation of the legacy left by his parents Janine and the late Dennis Carter Sr.

“It’s about giving every animal a real chance to thrive.” Despite his extensive experience, Dennis Carter Jr. admits, “I’ve been doing this for 31 years, but I learn something new every day.”

The TLC community mourned the loss of Dennis Carter Sr. in November 2022, a man whose dedication to animal welfare left an indelible mark. Janine Carter has expressed heartfelt gratitude to the community for their support, emphasizing that late Dennis Carter Sr.’s spirit lives on through TLC’s mission. Dennis Carter Jr. carries that legacy forward, ensuring the shelter remains a place of hope and second chances.

Bailey is one such story of hope waiting to happen. This 3½-year-old mixed mutt has been at the shelter for just three weeks; capturing the hearts of staff with her affectionate nature and gentle demeanor. Whether you’re looking for a jogging partner or a cozy couch companion, Bailey is ready to bring joy and warmth to your life as you step into 2025.

The tabby brothers, Fred and George.

Fred and George, a lively pair of orange tabby brothers, perfectly capture the spirit of companionship and connection. These inseparable siblings are looking for a home where they can continue their lifelong bond. Their playful antics and heartwarming affection promise to bring double the joy and endless smiles to their future family.

The shelter also sees its share of owner surrenders, like Cheech and Chong, an adorable duo of cats who arrived at TLC through no fault of their own. Their playful and affectionate personalities have already made them favorites among staff and visitors, showcasing the resilience and charm of pets in need of a second chance.

Every animal at TLC receives the best possible start before transitioning to their forever homes. From spaying or neutering to vaccinations against diseases like distemper, heartworm testing (with treatments provided if necessary), and microchipping for safety, TLC ensures that every new pet owner begins their journey worry-free.

What sets TLC apart is their lifelong commitment to the animals they care for. “If an adoption doesn’t work out, we want people to know they’re not alone,” Dennis Carter Jr. said. “We’ll always take the animal back and make sure their safe. It’s part of our promise to give each pet the best chance at finding their forever home.”

Pets have a unique way of making life brighter. After a recent loss, my own cat, Sherbert, has given me responsibility and purpose during a difficult time; helping me navigate life’s challenges with her gentle companionship. She’s been with me for 11 years, and her quiet presence has been a constant source of comfort. Of course, she’s also taken over the whole bed—I’m relegated to the very edge, as it should be.

Through life’s ups and downs, Sherbert has been my steadfast supporter, reminding me how even small moments of connection can bring immense comfort. For many, a pet isn’t just part of the family—they’re the ones who make it whole, offering love without asking for anything in return.

As you consider your goals for the new year, why not include a resolution that brings joy, love, and companionship? Visit TLC Animal Shelter, 13016 W 151st St, Homer Glen, to meet Bailey, Fred, George, Cheech, Chong, and many other lovable animals waiting for their second chance.
